In a decisive move, Nigeria Postal Services (NIPOST) has shut down five courier and logistics offices across Edo State amid allegations of illegal operations and license violations.
The clampdown also included the seizure of seven delivery motorcycles, marking a significant crackdown on unlicensed activities in the sector.
According to ICA-Ibe, Chido & Associates, the closures come as part of a broader effort to address rampant non-compliance and unethical practices within the courier industry.
Gideon Oludotun Shonde, NIPOST’s General Manager for the Courier and Logistics division, confirmed the action, stating it was essential to clean up the state’s logistics sector.
Shonde emphasized that the operation was sanctioned by Tola Odeyemi, CEO and Postmaster-General of the Federation, and was conducted under the statutory provisions of Section 43 (1, 2, and 3) of the NIPOST Act, CAP 127, LFN 2004, and the Regulatory Operational Guidelines 2024.
This legal framework empowers NIPOST to target unlicensed and unlawful Courier, Express, Delivery, Dispatch, and Logistics Operators across the country.
“The proliferation of unlicensed and illegal courier services has severely compromised industry standards and public safety,” Shonde stated.
He highlighted concerns over the carriage of illicit drugs, weapons, and other prohibited items, as well as unethical practices such as price undercutting, pilfering, and the mishandling of customer goods.
Shonde further explained that these illegal operators undermine legitimate businesses and pose significant risks to public safety. The enforcement action aims to restore integrity and fair competition within the sector.
“Illegal courier and logistics activities not only breach regulations but also endanger public safety and fair business practices,” Shonde added.
“Those caught operating without the proper licenses will face arrest and prosecution. It’s a serious offense against the state.”
He also encouraged aspiring courier service providers to adhere to legal requirements and obtain the necessary licenses from NIPOST to ensure compliance and professional standards.
